Board Of Education Announcements

At Monday's Board of Education meeting the following important announcements were made, by Board President Barbara Berkowitz.

Please take a moment to read below.

1) The Board is looking into creating an Early Childhood Center at the North end of town. This is a project that has been desired for several years now, based on the success of Parkville at the south end of town, coupled with the desire and need for a similar early childhood center at the North end of Great Neck. The board is currently exploring the various ways that they can make this work for our community, and will keep us updated.

2) A bond issue was proposed for capital improvements to our schools. The projected date of the bond being put forth will be voted on by the community: this will take place on Tuesday, February 14th, 2017. The timing is necessary to take advantage of the low-interest rates, as well as taking over the debt service of the last bond, which was voted upon over twenty years ago. More information to follow.

3) The Board approved the formation of TWO advisory committees as part of their continued desire to increase parent and community participation in board matters.

The first committee will be a Citizens Advisory Committee.

Composition will be:

--up to 3 parents of current pre-K to grade 12 students

--up to 3 community members who do not have children currently attending our public schools

--up to 3 current secondary school students

--up to 3 current staff members (employees of the district must apply as staff members)

--the Superintendent of Schools, or her designee

--1 to 2 Board of Education members (who will be responsible for coordinating dates for the meetings.)

Terms will be for one year, but staff and students may be selected for, or excused from, committee membership by the Superintendent, based on the issue/issues being reviewed.

The second committee will be a Financial Advisory Committee.

Composition will be:

--up to 3 parents of current pre-K to grade 12 students

--up to 3 community members who do not have children currently attending our public schools

--up to 3 current secondary school students
